Who is the course for:
This course suits individuals or those involved in community groups who are interested in learning more about key historical events which have shaped the history of Northern Ireland and Ireland.
Outline of course content:
This course covers:
• The crucial historical period from 1886 to 1921
• The development of Nationalism and Unionism
• The role of soldiers of the 16th Irish Division and the 36th Ulster Division in World War One
• The events of the Easter Rising
• The Partition of Ireland
• The formation of the Irish Free State and Northern Ireland
Course aims:
The course introduces participants to the skills required to explore the past such as examining the same historical event from different perspectives and using different materials to look at history. They will also explore the meaning of history for contemporary identity.
Possible progression routes:
At the end of the course participants will be offered the opportunity to explore what UPC programmes would be of interest to them. Many participants progress to OCN Level 2 Peoples’ History.
Assessment:
There is no formal assessment of this course as it is unaccredited. However, ongoing informal feedback will be given to learners as they take part in group exercises and participate in class discussions.
