The UPC as part of the People’s History Initiative is running a series of lectures focusing on key local historical events.
UPC Lecturer Karen McCartney explains, “Many of the groups who have taken part in the People’s History Initiative were keen to explore some areas of history further so we decided to organise a series of lectures covering a range of topics such as the History of Belfast, Nationalism, Unionism, and Home Rule from 1885 – 1914, the Partition of Ireland, Socialism in Northern Ireland, Civil Rights and the Ulster Workers’ Council strike.”
The first lecture by historian, journalist and lecturer Dr Eamon Phoenix was enjoyed by all the participants who found it both interesting and enjoyable. The theme of the lecture was ‘The Athens of the North: the Growth of Belfast from Plantation Times to the Twentieth Century: 1610 to 2000’.
