Who is the course for:  
This course is for people who have an interest in their local community or in a particular community of interest and who wish to understand the principles and values that underpin community development.


Outline of course content:
This course covers:
• The nature of community
• The principles of community development
• Compiling a community profile
• Responses to local historical developments


Course aims:
The course allows participants to explore issues of historical and current importance to their community.  It also aims to help participants understand the principles of community development and to examine how the practice of community development might benefit their local community.


Progression routes:
At the end of the course participants will be offered the opportunity to explore what UPC programmes would be of interest to them.  Many participants progress to OCN Level 1 Introduction to Community Development or OCN Level 2 Community Leadership.

• Group discussion
• Short written tasks
