Launch of Global Connections coursesgc

The UPC has recently received funding from the Department of International Development to deliver a range of education courses around International Development issues. These courses will be of great value to community activists and interested groups and individuals who would like to learn about global issues and how they affect us locally.

 We are currently recruiting for the first three of these courses. Courses are two days long and will run form 10:00 to 4:00 p.m. each day. All courses are free of charge and will be held at the Ulster Peoples College.

Outcomes:

The main outcomes of the project will be:

1. Greater awareness with community organisations of the links between local and international development issues;

2. Greater commitment to fair-trade products;

3. Increased levels of volunteering with development agencies;

4. Better understanding of and behaviour towards ethnic minorities;

5. Increased understanding of the interdependency between North and South;

6. Higher levels of campaigning and lobbying on international issues;

7. More caring, informed and empathetic individuals and communities.

Beneficiaries:

The direct beneficiaries of the project will be individual community activists and community groups from dsiadvantaged communities across Northern Ireland.

Courses:

Millennium Development Goals 
28th and 29th October 2008

This course will examine local and global poverty issues and look at strategies used to address inequalities. It will focus primarily on the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals and how they are being addressed. It will also give participants an insight into global economic and political systems.

This course is completed
   
Global Citizenship
25th and 26th November 2008
This course will look at citizenship in global context and participants will explore key concepts, such as globalisation and interdependence. It will give participants an opportunity to think about issues of diversity, social justice and equality. It will be of use to all those who want to campaign around global issues.

 Peace and Conflict     11th and 12th December 2008
This course will be of great interest to community activists who would like to develop their understanding of peace processes and conflict. It will examine the causes of political conflict in divided societies and how peace building processes have been developed. Comparisons between Northern Ireland and other divided societies will help participants to gain a global perspective of local events.
